RIM Intensifies War Of Words With Apple

Research in Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie has attacked rival hardware maker Apple, claiming that the company's upcoming Playbook tablet PC is three to four times faster than the iPad.

Balsillie's comments were made during the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, where he promoted the Playbook as well as launching a verbal assault on Apple and Steve Jobs.

The company compared the Playbook with the iPad by performing several tasks, including web browsing and video playback. RIM also showed a video in which both the tablet devices were run side-by-side to judge browsing speeds.

Previously, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has dismissed devices like RIM's Playbook, claiming that small-screened tablet computers were "dead on arrival" and would not be able to compete with the iPad.

RIM is also touting Playbook's hardware rather than the number of apps it will offer. RIM believes that although apps are necessary, users shouldn't need apps to access the web.

“You don't need an app for the Web. We believe you can bring the mobile to the Web, but you don't need to go through some kind of control point. It is really not about a set of proprietary rules or about appifying the Web,” Balsillie said.
