Swap Your Android Keyboard IME When You Change Orientation

Some keyboards work great when your phone is in its portrait orientation, but not so well when you rotate to landscape, and vice versa.

Wouldn't it be great if you could pick one keyboard to use when you're in portrait (like Graffitti or 8pen), and another when you're in landscape (like HTC IME, the stock Android keyboard, or even Swype)?

That's what ne0fhyk at XDA-Developers thought when he came up with his app: Keyboard Manager.

Keyboard Manager essentially lets you define a keyboard to use in landscape and another in portrait, then swaps out your default keyboard when you rotate your device from one orientation to the other.

Installing it isn't all that easy, it's not like a normal app that you download from the Market and install. Instead you have to manually copy it to your /system/app folder, and change its permissions. Doing this requires that you have root access on your phone.

If you'd like to give it a try, here's what you need to do:

1. Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) from the XDA-Developers' thread to your sdcard

2. Using a file manager such as Root Explorer, move the .apk file to /system/app

3. Using your file manager, edit the file permissions:
-- User: 'Read/Write'
-- Group: 'Read'
-- Others: 'Read'

4. Launch Keyboard Manager from your app drawer and configure it to your liking
