Is Windows Phone 7 Hackable?

It's inevitable: once skilled developers get their hands on a cell phone platform, it's only a matter of time before it becomes unlocked, jailbroken, rooted, hacked, and modified. When this happens, a flood of creative modifications are made available and end-users benefit by a wave of new possibilities that extend beyond that confines of what an OEM or carrier had in mind.

Windows Mobile is one of the most hackable platforms out there. Don't like your ROM? Change it! Want to redo your entire interface? Sure! Want to make a minor tweak that only a registry edit could allow for? No problem! With the release of Windows Phone 7, it looks like that modifying the system might not be so easy. XDA-Developers has interviewed one of their top developers to get some answers. While his comments are highly technical, we can learn a few things. First, it's extremely likely that HD2 owners will be able to run Windows Phone 7 on their device in the not-too-distant future. Other Windows Mobile devices aren't likely to see a WP7 port anytime soon, if ever.

Second, once Windows Phone 7 is "jailbroken" or "unlocked", the system will be modifiable to a degree seen in legacy Windows Mobile. It's just a matter of time. When it happens, we'll presumably be able to do all sorts of fun things with the platform. Imagine being able to add a third column of tiles to your Start screen. Or, the People hub could integrate with Twitter.

Overall, the interview is an interesting read if you like to get technical. Hit the link below for more.
