Latest Google Maps provides a small Gingerbread treat?

Latest Google Maps provides a small Gingerbread treat?
Thanks to a clever hacker by the name of canadiancow we might have our first glimpse of some of the UI tweaks coming to Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Apparently the latest update to Google Maps (4.6) included several icons and styling for Android’s API level 9, which corresponds with Gingerbread (level 8 is Android 2.2).

By changing the API level in his build.prop file, he was able to display the new UI styling and that is what you see above (old on the left, new on the right). The new UI styling is much darker and uses bright green for the highlights. This matches up with everything I’ve heard from inside sources and it also lines up with Quentyn’s Gingerbread details posted at Phandroid.
Overall it’s not too much to get excited about, but at least it demonstrates how close we are to the official launch of Gingerbread. If new apps from Google already have pieces of Gingerbread baked-in, then the release can’t be far away. Google placed the giant Gingerbread man on their campus on October 22nd and we hear November 11th could be the date most of us are waiting on.
