Apple’s newest notebooks, the 11.6- and
13.3-inch MacBook Airs, came in first in their respective categories in the
latestConsumer
Reports laptop assessment. The MacBook Pro also ranked best in two
more notebook categories, giving Apple first-place ranking nearly across the
board.
The 11.6-inch MacBook Air beat out
Toshiba’s Satellite T115D-S1120, its only competitor in the 11-inch laptop
category. The smaller Air earned a score of 67 out of a possible 100, or a
“Very Good” rating according to Consumer Reports’ scale. Versatility and
speakers were the areas where the organization had the most complaints, giving
the Air only a “Fair” rating in both categories. It earned a “Good” in
performance, and a “Very Good” in ergonomics and display.
The 13.3-inch model earned a score of 78
out of 100, putting it at the top of the field in the 13-inch category. It got
a “Very Good” rating across performance, ergonomics and display, a “Good”
rating for speakers and a “Fair” in versatility. Two different configurations of
the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro also made the top five, coming in third and fourth
with scores of 73 and 72.
The 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros also
took the top spots in their respective categories, beating out all other
laptops in the 15- to 18-inch range. There’s only one category where Apple
didn’t place — the 14-inch group — and that’s because it doesn’t make a
computer that size.
Apple has no reason to complain about
these new Consumer Reports rankings. Apple’s hardware even got the coveted
“Buy” recommendation this
time around. We’ll see if sales numbers mirror the Air’s ongoing
success among critics and reviewers.
