Ever wondered, if you can pay your bills via mobile phone? The concept can very soon turn into reality, thanks to Android 2.3 mobile operating system. Addressing at Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, Google CEO, Eric Schmidt said that Android 2.0 will support a technology called Near Field Communication (NFC) which will allow two devices to exchange data from each other kept at maximum 4 inches apart by transmitting signals. Cell phones containing NFC chips will swap data in real time.
Commenting on the technology Schmidt said that in near future cell phones embedded with these chips will be really powerful and hoped that in near future he will not be required to carry his credit cards. He also added that such making payments via NFC technology also reduce the risk of fraud associated with payments via credit cards.
It to be noted that at present only a few cell phones are equipped with NFC chips but it is anticipated that with Android 2.3 supporting NFC, more number of cell phones will be equipped with these chips. However Google has now has no plans to come up with software dedicated for payment via mobile phones and will instead forge partnership with credit card companies for it.
However for payments using NFC technology, it is essential that stores have machines installed which will accept payment through NFC equipped cell phones. A large number of firms such as Jack Dorsey’s Square and EBay’s Pal are working on technologies which allow people to make their purchase via mobile phone.
